Meet Our First Lady

SONYA M. SLOAN, M.D.

Sonya M. Sloan is a native of Denison, Texas.  She is a graduate of Texas Tech University where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry.  In 1992, she gained national attention as the first African-American Homecoming Queen at Texas Tech. She was an entrepreneur and owner of “Not Just Coffee.”

Dr. Sloan received her Medical Doctor degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston.  Upon graduation from UTMB, Dr. Sloan accepted a residency position in surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.  She was the first ever African-American female surgical resident in the history of Baylor College of Medicine.  After a year of surgical residency, Dr. Sloan became the first African-American female Orthopedic Surgical resident at Baylor College of Medicine.  She has completed several research projects in Orthopedic Sports Medicine (published) and a joint venture with NASA, Johnson Space Center.

Dr. Sloan is the First Lady of “The Luke,” St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Humble and involved in the implementation of a Faith Based Health Initiative for her church and community. She has served as a Medical Board Advisor for the Houston Area Urban League, Inc. on the Community based Diabetes Education and Prevention Program “Lift Every Voice.” She serves as Vice President on the Board of Trustees for Roz House (a transitional living facility for women). She is a public speaker for health and empowerment for women. Dr. Sloan has also served as a volunteer physician for the Tom Joyner national initiative – “Take a Loved one to the Doctor Day.”

Dr. Sloan is the founder of AAA-CP (African American Association for Christian Physicians) as well as ME & WE, Inc. (Motivating and Empowering Women to Excel).  Dr. Sloan is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mary Susan Moore – Black Female Physicians and multiple academic societies. She currently is the servant leader for The Luke Women’s Ministry.

Dr. Sloan is blessed in marriage to the Rev. Dr. Timothy W. Sloan and has two beautiful daughters, Sarah Julia and Soren Grace.
